2702 Assists Institutions in Bringing History to Life
Members of the Cowskin Prairie 2702 CWND, Baxter Springs, Kansas, have spent the last several years presenting living history in the tri-state area of Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma. At the invitation of the Baxter Springs Heritage Museum, chapter members have worked with K-10th grade students from numerous schools and, in so doing, have reached thousands of young people through their Living History and Night in the Museum programs. Members have worked as presenters and behind-the-scenes support personnel.
Early in 2014, a special request for participation was received from Har-Ber Village, Grove, Oklahoma, which is at the edge of Cowskin Prairie. This led to several chapter members taking part in various special events, dressed in period clothing and sharing history of the area, including the War Between the States. These hearty souls have taken part in Civil War Days, Pioneer Days, Women’s Fashion Exhibit, Christmas on Main Street and several other activities and events at Har-Ber Village.
This group of active interested historians continues their presentations and assistance to both museums. These busy chapter members remain dedicated to researching and developing characters and plans for future presentations.
Not only have the historical presentations been fun and rewarding, it has been a wonderful opportunity to share Southern history. It has also been the perfect way to share the United Daughters of the Confederacy and to locate potential members.
