Member Trip to Lone Jack

July 29, 2015, dawned a beautiful sunny day, as three members and one associate member took off for a road trip to the Battle of Lone Jack Museum.  Kay Fleming, Sherry Rollins, Luretta Williams and Fredrea Cook drove to Greenwood, which is just south of Lee’s Summit, Missouri.  Here, they enjoyed a leisurely lunch filled with laughter and antiques, at the Greenwood Country Tearoom.  Greenwood was the home of the Younger Family, noted Civil War bushwhacker and outlaw family.  Following lunch, it was on to Lone Jack, site of a Confederate victory!

Upon arrival at the museum, the ladies toured the facility and shared the excitement as Luretta saw her Civil War ancestor in the first display case they saw.  What a surprise!  She knew he was injured at the Battle of Lone Jack, but nobody was prepared to see a photo of him or information about him in the museum display.  It turned out that he was injured on the spot where the museum was built!

They also visited the cemetery on the grounds.  The Confederate memorial is very nice and a First National Flag is located there.  The ladies were told that the Jackson County Commissioners visited the site recently and double checked their flags.  They approved using the true Flag of the Confederacy, which is flown on a large flagpole in front of the museum, along with other flags.
